Tammar’s Visits is out now via Suicide Squeeze on CD, LP and all DSPs. In celebration of the release this week, the band has premiered a video for the album’s lead single, “The Last Line” via Pitchfork as well as a remix of the track by Dylan Ettinger via The Fader. Additionally, the band have a few live dates to mention: September 23 in Cincinnati, OH at MOTR Pub for an appearance at MidPoint Music Fest; A record release party on October 1 in Bloomington, IN at Can-O-Worms; and October 23 in Brooklyn, NY at Cameo Gallery. Full tour date listing below.
With Visits, Tammar mine the classic sounds of paranoia, malaise and misanthropy (Joy Division, The Velvet Underground, The Fall and early 90s alt-rock), and fill it all with so much exuberance and joy of playing that each song becomes a triumph over anxiety and ennui. Visits finds each of the band’s five members stepping outside of themselves, but not in an snake-poison-ingesting, flopping-on-the-floor sense. It’s something else, something full of wonder. It’s witnessing a dear friend suddenly unveil an incredible hidden talent, as if that talent is levitation or some shit. These songs burst and evolve like water capsule toys. Warm beds of wobbly and fat-bodied krautpop prove to be overwhelming, atmospheric art-rock tours de force. You are left pie-eyed and windblown by the whole glorious affair. It’s the B-side of Neu! 75 as pep rally music. It’s the kind of thing that would have flipped Old Man Peel’s wig in another place and time.
Pitchfork dropped a great review on the LP this week and said, “On Visits, the band’s confident debut studio LP, swollen drones and surprising subtleties temper the epic impulses on tunes that, in less artful hands, might be overly grandiose anthems gone wrong. Appropriate for a group that began with free-music explorations, Tammar intuit when to build, when to change, and when to collapse. Never obvious or predictable, the band crafts songs that aren’t boring, but also aren’t too big. Like Spacemen 3 with Wembley Stadium aspirations.”
Meanwhile, Spin called “The Last Line” a “Wide-eyed, agape, we’ve-cracked the-kosmiche-egg krautrock choogle that starbursts on a crackling guitar coda, then falls gently to earth.” And Nylon also raved about the track, saying, “Isn’t it weird how sometimes the music you’re into corresponds to the temperatures outside? This week it’s been all about Tammar, the Indiana-bred indie rockers whose combination of velvety melodies and laid-back percussion lends itself to a shoegaze sound that’s about as hot and heavy as the weather. But unlike the gross, sticky feeling you get when you step into the mucky air, listening to Tammar’s first single "The Last Line” leaves you instantly refreshed.“
