Towards the end of last year, low profile Washington state legends Lync returned from the shadows, offering a split 7″ with Pedro The Lion’David Bazan. The limited pressing featured the original version of the song “B,” as well as an earthy cover from Bazan. Building on that tradition, Lync have announced another split 7″, this time with Julia & The Squeezettes“Cue Cards” is out Friday, February 14 via Suicide Squeeze Records.

Today, January 28, Julia & The Squeezettes share their cover of Lync’s “Cue Cards.” The new punk supergroup was spearheaded by Julia Kugel of The Coathangers and Julia, Julia. She’s joined by Staz Lindes of The ParanoydsBonnie Bloomgarden of Death Valley Girls; and Rikki Styxx of The Two Tens. The band’s rendition is faithful to Lync’s energetic original, with lo-fi, rain streaked instrumentation. But faded vocal harmonies, reminiscent of some ghostly ’50s girl group, lend “Cue Cards” a haunting element that calls to mind mist emanating off the Puget Sound.

On the reimagining, Kugel shares: “We created the cover one afternoon in our home studio. No rehearsals and no preconceptions! It’s truly a snapshot of the gathering of souls that day. Our version of the song came together naturally and spontaneously. I love the raw energy of the original and I think we captured a bit of that but were able to put our own spin on it. The goal was to highlight everyone’s individuality. I loved working, creating & hanging with these talented humans! Grateful for the trust of Lync & Suicide Squeeze to work on this project.”

James Bertram of Lync also shares: “On the heels of Pedro the Lion’s stripped down cover of “b”, a Supergroup of talented folks, brought together for this recording by Julia of The Coathangers, and featuring Staz Lindes of The Paranoyds, Bonnie Bloomgarden of Death Valley Girls, and Rikki Styxx of The Two Tens, has produced a wonderful surprise rendition of the track “cue cards” off of these are not fall colors. Bringing past and present together once again, it’s such a pleasure to share another split 7″ released by the mighty Suicide Squeeze!”
